Photographs from the François Matthes papers [graphic]. 1871-ca. 1940.

Pictures from trips (including camping) around the United States include scenes in the Rocky Mountains, views of Montana and Yosemite, Calif. Many views of Sierra Nevada scenes are also included. Matthes is pictured with the crew of the Richfield Eagle airplane after a flight over Sequoia National Park in 1936. Two copies of a portrait of Matthes' father are included, as is a pastel of Mono Lake by Frances C. Kirk. Other items include photographs taken to illustrate Matthes' publications, photographs of rocks and landscapes with captions explaining their geological significance, and snapshots from various Boy Scout trips.

Topographer, geologist, geomorphologist. Matthes, a native of Holland, came to the U.S. at age 17, graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1895, became a U.S. citizen in 1896, and in that year joined the Topographic Branch of the U.S. Geological Survey. He gained a national reputation as a topographer through his work in Wyoming, Glacier National Park, the Grand Canyon (Ariz.), and Yosemite National Park (Calif.).
